The Problem in America
And how to heal it
There has been a great wounding to the American soul after the actions of this past week.
It was a shock to many but in hindsight, it was expected. What we are seeing is the playing out of the American shadow. It was finally brought to light for all to see and was a horrific scene.
The dysfunction and hatred can no longer be ignored. It can and must be healed.
We hear the news and well-meaning people saying, “How could this happen?” It did not happen in a vacuum and was not just the result of the last 4 years. Americans have been in denial — each of their own shadow and collectively as a nation. One person cannot cause such a thing. Although the fanning of the fire of hatred has certainly been commonplace in the recent White House administration. So, the last 4 years have been negatively impactful to a high degree for sure, but it did not begin there.
When did it all start?
We say America’s founding was about was religious freedom and the right to worship and grow as we chose individually, but that really meant only for a few. History has proved it out, and although many romanticize about America’s beginnings, the truth is that America has been in turmoil and in egoic pride and elitism since the beginning. We took over a nation of people already settled in their homeland, the Native Americans, and in that time words were said and treaties were made and not upheld. Those agreements and treaties still stand today and they are still not upheld. Anyone living on an Indian reservation today can tell you the details of the treaty and the government’s constant and consistent deceit of their land and people. This is not ancient history, it is happening now…still.
So when we discuss American history and leave all this out, we are in a place of deep denial. Yes, religious freedom was a goal, but only for some. Later as we grew and prospered it became about owning a home and financially prospering, but not if you were black. If you were black you were expected to live “on the other side of the tracks,” and in fact city planners and developers made sure this was so. Here in Orlando there is literally a street named “Division” that divided the whites from blacks. It has been here since the beginnings of our country’s founding. This is America’s shadow we are seeing played out on a global stage for all to see.
The problems we are seeing are not new, and I am sure you are feeling helpless and hopeless at times. The shadow can seem so powerful and overwhelming. But we are stronger than the shadow. The light in you is stronger than the shadow, but it has to be called out. It has to be seen and healed. It has to be put in its proper place and not allowed to run rampant in our lives…or on social media! Love of the highest level must be vigilantly nurtured and practiced and we have to tirelessly work for peace, justice and compassion. We must live what it is we say we believe.
As a spiritual student, you are part of what can heal the nation from its core.
Living the light of God that you are and working for justice and freedom for all, you will be the healing America needs. As you grow spiritually you will begin to impact others in such a way that spirituality will be the new trend. Kindness and love will be the new norm and acts of violence will begin to disappear. But when and only when you live your light and settle for nothing less.
In hope for tomorrow,
